A Woman’s Influence

There is nothing which has a more abiding influence on the happiness of a family than the preservation of equable and cheerful temper and tones in the housekeeper.  A woman who is habitually gentle, sympathizing, forbearing, and cheerful, carries an atmosphere about her which imparts a soothing and sustaining influence, and renders it easier for all to do right, under her administration, than in any other situation.

From “American Woman’s Home” by Catharine Esther Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe, 1869

This makes me both laugh and smile.

If you knew me you would know that I am not always consistent. I am not consistently gentle, forbearing or cheerful; sometimes (okay, a lot of times) I am irritable, moody and impatient. That’s why I laugh because being it sounds like Catharine and Harriet Beecher were reaching for the stars.

But, I smile because my fondest memories and most blessed times are eternally tied to my happy, cheerful, loving mother. Her smile was contagious, her spirit full of joy and she made our home sweet and doing right an easier choice.

A bit of encouragement for all you sweet women: keep being sweet. Keep forbearing with others even when you feel like you fail more than succeed.

Because your gentle love will impact others.

Love, blessings and coffee,

Frannie

  1. Oh! I love that quote Frannie! And what a great reminder. I’ve always struggled with consistency in my attitude, and go through many highs and lows. But what GOD has placed in my life right now is showing me that a good attitude as often as possible, makes life much smoother. 🙂

Have a beautiful summer day! I hope it’s been a bit cooler in your neck of the woods. 😀

    1. You are beautiful, Angel. And you encourage me — it *is* better to have a good attitude as often as possible instead of wishing (or pining) for one always. That really encourages me.

And thank you for thinking about me and my heat struggle. 🙂 It has been a bit cooler and I have enjoyed opening the windows in the morning hours to let the breeze in.

I hope you are enjoying the heat and that this week is *overflowing* with good, beautiful things. You are in my thoughts and prayers!

  2. A perfect picture of me….in my dreams! How I would love to be that woman.
Like you, Frannie, I can relate to my late mother in those words.
I am a work in progress.

    1. Hehehee! Miss Barbara, you are funny. I to admire and desire to be that woman … I guess it is little by little as we look more into our Savior’s face and be conformed into His sweet image. 🙂

I am blessed to know that your mother was an example of this good woman; I would love to hear more about her if you ever feel like writing on her. I would definitely read it.

      Many blessings!
