There is nothing which has a more abiding influence on the happiness of a family than the preservation of equable and cheerful temper and tones in the housekeeper. A woman who is habitually gentle, sympathizing, forbearing, and cheerful, carries an atmosphere about her which imparts a soothing and sustaining influence, and renders it easier for all to do right, under her administration, than in any other situation.
From “American Woman’s Home” by Catharine Esther Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe, 1869
This makes me both laugh and smile.
If you knew me you would know that I am not always consistent. I am not consistently gentle, forbearing or cheerful; sometimes (okay, a lot of times) I am irritable, moody and impatient. That’s why I laugh because being it sounds like Catharine and Harriet Beecher were reaching for the stars.
But, I smile because my fondest memories and most blessed times are eternally tied to my happy, cheerful, loving mother. Her smile was contagious, her spirit full of joy and she made our home sweet and doing right an easier choice.
A bit of encouragement for all you sweet women: keep being sweet. Keep forbearing with others even when you feel like you fail more than succeed.
Because your gentle love will impact others.
